Worldbuilding with your Players - 07/01/20

Worldbuilding with your Players I created a homebrew setting for my current campaign. My favorite campaigns are, without fail, the ones where I make my own setting. The sense of ownership and authorship I have over the setting makes it so much easier for me to get invested in the story being told. Plus, it lets me tailor elements of the setting specifically to the stories that I want to tell. You can tell amazing stories with published settings like Eberron , Wildemount , and Theros , and these pre-made settings can save you tons of hours of work—but they also ask you to put in the time to read them cover to cover a couple of times to internalize the lore. Everyone has their own preferences, but I want to encourage you to try making your own personal campaign setting at least once. I’ve made five or six campaign settings over the ten years I’ve been DMing games of D&D. Two of them were thinly-disguised remodels of the Sword Coast that I transposed published adventures to. When I r...

Encounter of the Week: Frost and Fear in Fireshear Are you prepared to journey to Icewind Dale, the frozen north of Faerûn? Times are strange, and countless rumors swirl around this cold and isolated land, like so many snowflakes in an endless blizzard. The next D&D adventure, announced at D&D Live 2020, is dark fantasy horror story titled Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. This encounter is the second part of a five-part (or perhaps more?) encounter series called “Icewind Mail: Special Delivery” is a non-canon dark comedy that leads into the official adventure. Well, sort of. It’s more like it tosses players in the general direction of the official adventure with some silly props and tells them to go have fun.
New Player’s Guide: Character Relationships Roleplaying games are a social activity. The D&D groups that we remember for years to come are those played together with friends whom we love, or come to love over the course of countless sessions. These are the groups whose characters remain with us, who we tell stories about, and who we compare all other RPG characters to in the future. Games like this sometimes happen by pure chance, but your odds of forming a legendary gaming group with an epic campaign and unforgettable characters skyrocket when you consciously work with your friends between sessions to create strong character relationships. In this installment of New Player’s Guide, learn how to create character bonds in-game, how to extend character bonding outside of RPG sessions, and how to help ease you and your friends into forming deep character relationships without making things awkward.
Spell Spotlight: Healing Word and Spiritual Weapon Spell Spotlight examines D&D’s best, worst, and most interesting spells, giving you the tools you need to play a spellcaster who knows exactly what they’re doing. Today, we’re looking at two iconic cleric spells: healing word and spiritual weapon . These spells define the low-level cleric experience, giving characters who master them highly flexible and mobile healing and combat abilities.

Encounter of the Week: Wrath of the Returned Welcome to Theros! You can start your players on an adventure of mythic proportions with the adventure “No Silent Secret,” in Mythic Odysseys of Theros . In that story, the characters discover a great secret about Phenax, god of deception. Phenax’s secret was lost in the Underworld when the returned god fled death in a time obscured by the mists of legend. The exact nature of this secret isn’t important to the story of this encounter, though it may be important to your ongoing campaign. What is important is that discovering this secret has put the characters in grave danger. Their enemy now: Erebos, god of death himself.
Welcome to Theros! - 06/12/20

Welcome to Theros! Welcome to Theros! Mythic Odysseys of Theros is the latest Dungeons and Dragons sourcebook, and it’s available now on D&D Beyond. Due to COVID-19, the book’s physical release has been delayed until July 21st, but you can get it digitally right now in the D&D Beyond Marketplace . Inspired by Greek mythology, Theros is a setting originally created for Magic: The Gathering, now beautifully realized as a setting for D&D adventures. Theros is filled with petty and powerful gods whose whims affect mortals on a daily basis, mythic monsters more powerful and terrifying than any the worlds of D&D have seen, and divine gifts that mark your characters as heroes destined for greatness. Yet for all these epic qualities, Theros is also a world filled with quieter moments of love, storytelling, and community. The three poleis of Theros are hubs of culture and philosophy, and are perfect places for heroes to have quieter adventures in-between adventures of mythic proportions. ...
