I wanted to write a new original song for this weeks entry, and I thought, for most of you, the summer is coming to an end. Funnily enough, it is just entering Spring here in New Zealand, but I wanted to reflect the chill summer vibes that I know many of you are enjoying, and some of us are longing for! I kept this to around 2 minutes, and yes it is a demo song, I mixed it all and added some soft drums which have the tape 90s sound to it which I quite like. Remembering the good days of endless jams on something that cost less than your weekly bills? For me, it was a Columbus Crest (Strat Copy) and I miss that guitar very much. There was also a classical guitar that I sold for like $40 many years ago, that I regret... but, I have a lot of fun with guitars, so that is understandable! Anyway, let's get to todays video... In Part 1 I was not only recording in a dark room and a lot younger, I had just upgraded my $150 LTD M10 with some Seymour Duncan pickups, worth around $200. This LTD was my first guitar since I have been living in New Zealand, and I won't let this one get away :) not just for nostalgia, but, it rocks! I love playing it. The guitar shop didn’t have any Ernie Ball 10s left, so I went with these, which were a bit pricier, but the coating on them makes them feel brand new even after months! I love it! It is time for a review / comparison video! Something a bit different. Today I am talking about if I can make a budget guitar sound like a guitar worth thousands! In this video, I discuss whether I think an Epiphone can match a Gibson. This was a cheap Epiphone Les Paul Custom that I grabbed for $300 NZD and upgrade it with some sweet Seymour Duncan pickups—an SH-4 in the bridge and an SH-2n in the neck, both picked up used for $200 NZD. Now, that is an absolute bargain for an Epiphone Les Paul Custom - it was essentially a barn find and needed a lot of TLC! The big question: Can this Epiphone give a Gibson a run for its money after the upgrades? I’ll walk you through the mods, play some riffs, and share my thoughts on whether this budget setup holds its own against the big G.
