Space Farm - Egyptology 0.5 / Left Ear

Australian reissue champs Left Ear hit us with a dope DJ 12" featuring previously unreleased full length versions of Space Farm’s mid 90’s Egyptian inspired tracks. Both, ‘The Dawn of Birds’ and ‘Camels in Desert Air’ were initially cut short to allow for additional remixes on the original release but for this 2019 issue, Left Ear have decided to focus on these dope downtempo originals, allowing the heavy percussion and synth workouts to shine through on a loud 45RPM press. Dropping the needle into A-side offering "The Dawn Of Birds", I'm instantly hooked. Tribal percussion loops, digital bird calls and cosmic keytar? Totally having it. As for the ominous bass swells underneath, that's just a Brucey bonus as far as I'm concerned. Mythic club moves at around 105bpm - pure post apocalyptic Shaman shit folks. On the flip "Camels In Desert Air" wears the Egyptian influ...

Andre Tanker - River Come Down / Jamwax

After dropping Andre Tanker’s wonderful “Back Home” on our toes, Jamwax now hit us with "River Come Down" in its 12'' version. Originally released on the Contraband label in 1979 and recorded at famous Semp studio in Trinidad, “River Come Down” is a blend of islands funk, soul, disco, soca with also a touch of gospel: “River, the river come down, the river come down, the river down...wind blow like a hurricane...the river come down, washing the right, washing the wrong, washing the weak, washing the strong, the river come down...” On the other side you will find an obscure synth instrumental released on an impossible to find 7'' in 1986. “Movin Round” was produced by Andre Tanker for Horace Wilson's Turn of The Tide. This song was absolutely under the radar and remains a strong banger for any dances. Patrick says: Massive tropical disco/Island funk scor...

Pletnev - St Bones EP - Inc. Inga Mauer Remix / Le Temps Perdu

Fresh from an excellent outing on Bahnsteig 23's RSD double 7", Lithuania's Pletnev touches down on the presumably French Le Temps Perdu with a killer EP of warped electronics and off kilter chug. "St Bones" steps into the transporter with snapping drum machine snares, a touch of jack and niggling pitch bent synth-ery. As it rematerialises on an alien landscape, this primo chug powerhouse gets well wavey with a tripped out blast of wonking sine waves. Falling somewhere between Holy Ghost Inc and Weatherall's vision of Primal Scream, this one's a stormer. Next up "Devil's Logic" fuses block party breaks with mangled machine noise, nagging sequences and gloomy Giallo pads to feed the witching hour within us all. Skip to the flip and it's remix time as Ryota OPP and Inga Mauer take on the titular St. Bones. The Tokyo producer goes first, cutting out a few of the baggier elements of the track for a streamlined sojou...

Red Rack'em - In Love Again / Wolf Music

Limited edition repress, of this much loved Red Rack’em slice of genius that has been an elusive one to get a hold of in recent years, with the cheapest copy on the cogs racking in at £100. Originally tucked away on the B1 of Red Rack'em's "All I Ever Wanted EP" in 2010, "In Love Again" was a smash hit on all the underground dancefloors that mattered for the next couple of years. Deep warm pads, an emotive, soulful vocal sample and beautiful Detroit strings create a heartwrenching effect that can unite a club in harmony. An absolute beauty and an end of night classic. However, since Danny's work was well ahead of the curve, predating the rediscovery of early 90s house by a couple of years, Wolf Music are reissuing this modern classic for the new generation of clubbers and DJs with a slightly tweaked mix, quicker tempo and skippier drums. On the flip is a new Red Rack'Em production, "Latin Techno",...

Garies - Dull Clunk / Major Problems

A stand out album from the MPR crew as always. Strongly tipped by us here at Picc HQ. Full spectrum double 12” from Garies - eight tracks running from bittersweet beatdown-ish bits to slow-burn electro to second wave-inspired techno, injected with funk, melody and an MPC-mindset. Garies = New Jackson (All City, Hivern) + Lumigraph (MPR, Opal Tapes). Full colour cover. Mastered by Thomas P Heckmann. Cut at Schnittstelle. Pressed at MPO. Artwork by Mel Keane. Bada-bing bada-boom. Soda Springs Modified By This Irlande Nul Points My Ear

Antibalas - Where The Gods Are In Place / Daptone

Antibalas’ new studio album, "Where The Gods Are In Peace", is an epic Afro-Western trilogy searching for solace from American political opportunism, greed and vengeance. Through its battle cry of resistance against exploitation and displacement, Antibalas’ long-form compositions investigate oppression in 1800s America that eerily mirror the current state of the country. Three explosive original arrangements cultivate an urgent call to heal a broken system. Ultimately, the sonic excursion lands on an island where love is our first instinct. A new ideology is born opening our hearts to the possibilities of living as one unified people, where all gods are equal and together we prevail. True to traditional form, "Where The Gods Are In Peace" pays respect to the forefathers of afrobeat with compositions spanning nine to 15 minutes in length. With a blessing from the Fela Kuti legacy early in the band’s career, Antibalas has long been reve...

Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas - Green Vinyl Edition / Fantasy

Originally broadcast in 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas is hands down one of the most beloved specials in TV history. Commissioned by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, Vince Guaraldi and his trio rounded out by Monty Budwig (bass) and Colin Bailey (drums), composed and performed the timeless contemporary jazz score which wonderfully reflects both the spirit of the legendary Peanuts characters and the Christmas season. A Grammy Hall of Fame inductee in 2007, A Charlie Brown Christmas was inducted into the Library of Congress in May of 2012 with the accompanying statement, “A Charlie Brown Christmas introduced jazz to millions of listeners,” and 45 plus years on it's still doing just that. Peanuts and Vince Guaraldi historian Derrick Bang even goes so far as to say, "Back people into a corner and limit them to just one holiday album for the rest of their lives, and I suspect that an impressive number of folks, jazz fans or not, would select this one!" Reiss...

Gareth Ashton - Hanging Around Musicians / Empire Publications

As meteoric rises go - Gareth Ashton's takes some beating. Born and bred in Derbyshire, he had always been a keen drummer, like his father and in 1977 discovered the joys of punk via The Jam's performance on Top Of The Pops. Within weeks he was forming his own band The Ruin and within months he was playing on the same bill as punk trendsetters The Damned on a nationwide tour and living the dream with the short-lived The Irritators. After gigs in Sheffield, Edinburgh, Dundee and Manchester Gareth went on to pursue other musical goals but never quite hit those heights again. Nonetheless he drummed successfully all over the UK for over two decades playing everything from jazz-funk to country & western. Now retired, Gareth reflects on the lot of a semi-professional musician, a world away from the gilded lives of rock stars and their entourages.
