Episode 4: What is Fracking?

Hello! Welcome back to EcoFriendly, your friendly neighborhood podcast all about the environment. *Music* Today I will be discussing fracking. Now, some of you may be wondering what is fracking? That’s a fair question. Fracking also known as hydraulic fracturing is revolutionizing oil and gas drilling across the country and this is done by drilling deep into the earth, then using small explosions and a mix of water, sand, and chemicals to break up the shale rock formations that contain natural gas and oil. Now I bet you're wondering, okay I now know what fracking is so why is it bad for the environment? Well, I have the answer to that. Without the rigorous safety regulations, it can poison groundwater, pollute surface water, impair wild landscapes, and threaten wildlife. One of the main pollutants released in the fracking process is methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas that traps heat 84 times more effectively than carbon dioxide which makes it very dangerous. Methane is responsible for 17% of m...

Hello! Welcome back to EcoFriendly, your friendly neighborhood podcast all about the environment. *Music* Today’s topic is all about fashion. Fast fashion that is. Now I love shopping as much as the next person but did you shopping how harmful it can be to the environment? Not all shopping is bad but I’m going give you some information about how fast fashion is hurting the environment and give you some tips at the end on other ways to shop for clothes in an environmentally friendly way. Fast fashion is referring to an approach to clothing design, creation, and marketing that is trying to get the newest trends from catwalks to consumers in a quick and cheap way. This sounds wonderful except that experts estimate the fast fashion industry is responsible for nearly 10% of annual global emissions and is the second largest consumer of the worlds water supply. Obviously, this is very bad, but people are creating a ton of waste from not keeping the clothes buy. Clothing production has doubled in the pa...

Hello and welcome to the very first episode of EcoFriendly, your friendly neighborhood podcast all about the environment. I’m your host Darlene. *Music* This year we are in the midst of a very intense presidential election. I don't know about you, but I am definitely feeling the tension but it’s very encouraging to see everyone taking part in their civil duty and voting. For today’s episode, we will be discussing what both presidential candidates, if elected, are promising to do in order to fix climate change. This is purely just to provide information about each candidate’s policy. So, we will start with trumps policies. In June of 2017 trump promise to withdraw from the Paris Agreement of climate change. For those of you who do not know what the Paris agreement is, it is bringing all of the nations into a common cause which is combating climate change, adapting to its effects, and assisting developing countries to do so as well. The aim of this agreement is to keep the global temperature r...

Hello! Welcome to EcoFriendly, your friendly neighborhood podcast all about the environment. *theme music* I'm your host Darlene, I am a student studying Communications and Digital Studies. You may be wondering what does she know about the environment? It wasn't much until I started doing my own research and educating myself. My goal for this podcast is to share that information with you! This episode is all about Coronavirus, and it's effect on the environment. I never thought I would live through a pandemic and I bet you didn't either. The global pandemic is something that is recent and is effecting human health/the way people are living, but how is it effecting the environment? A Carbon Brief analysis stated back in March that COVID temporarily reduced Chinas CO2 emissions. For those of you who do not not what CO2 is, it is Carbon Dioxide which is a greenhouse gas. Of course its is slowly rising back up due to less restrictions. CO2 is the greenhouse gas most commonly produce...
